🇨🇦 Thinker, Hoarder. I gather news and current events to outline and identify issues with a Canadian point of view.

Canada is “selling” assets in the sense that we’re charging for access to resources that require large amounts of investment, research, and development. These aren’t all transactional, rather these can and should lead to deeper partnerships and long-term exchanges of technology.
The US-Israel-Iran conflict has no sign of ending. I suspect the Middle East will have to re-align behind Iran as the US seems to be experiencing institutional dementia. At this rate, the world will have to cope with the supply shocks from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for much longer than anyone would like.
Canada has the products the world needs to keep industry going. We can make these deals to fill the gap, and these deals will continue to keep Canada as a desirable place to live. We’re also a bulwark to basically the loss of Rule of Law to the United States.
I think this is Canada’s response to the US CLOUD Act and FISA 702. But, implied in this response is that Canada’s power system is uninterested in resolving the privacy issues that flow from those invasive pieces of US legislation as it relates to Canadians. Instead, it seems that the system has become interested or accustomed to access to this Canadian data, and wants it to continue with domestic legislation.
Ultimately, as we’ve seen with Salt Typhoon and other iterations of it, these types of indiscriminate legislation chips away at our collective rights, and makes the world less safe. With the recent news of the PHP vulnerabilities, and the eMudhra Certificate Security fiasco, it’s quite clear that building back doors to systems that have difficulty maintaining their front doors creates more instability and uncertainty.
