  • Thanks OP, appreciate it.

I’m not disagreeing with any of your other statements. The enshitification is real. However, let’s not put them in the Adobe camp just because they are selling ad metrics and open about it. That’s actually transparent and still only applies to people watching content with ads in it.

The overall Lifetime Plexpass user is completely not affected by this, so the entire first reaction to your post that it’s time to ditch Plex for some other platform is not really justified.

People who are using Plex for just selfhosting without using their free online streaming stuff are not affected by this at all.

But eventually yes, I’m sure capitalism will also kill Plex. But possibly our planet and entire civilisation before that.

  • OP is claiming Plex will now SELL your personal data.

Omitting that the user must provide consent, not like Firefox or Adobe just updates T&C and forces user agreement. OP’s title is upvote seeking, cherry picking to quote certain text which makes it seem like they leave the user no choice, and leaving out the part of the text that stipulates the user does have to consent prior to the sale of information.

Moreover, the sale of data seems to be in order to facilitate the ads they show in their free movie and tv content, and even then is still opt in. The ads aren’t, but the data sale isn’t.

For posterity the full OP at the time of this post

Plex now will SELL your personal data

    Text:

I consent to Plex to: (i) sell certain personal information (hashed emails, advertising identifiers) to third-parties for advertising and marketing purposes; and (ii) store and/or access certain personal information (advertising identifiers, IP address, content being watched) on my device(s) and share that information with Plex’s advertising partners. This data is used to deliver personalised ads and content, ad and content measurement, audience insights and product development. Your consent applies to all devices on which you have Plex installed. You can withdraw your consent at any time in Account Settings or using this page.

Can also read about the changes here: https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy-legal/

Edit: OP update the title and has my support should they run for public office.

    OP is posting misleading hyperbole

This from the Plex site, emphasis mine.

    Consent

We take your privacy seriously. If you’d like more details on how we collect, use, and transfer your information, please review our Privacy Policy. Plex is able to provide free-to-watch movies, shows, and live TV by displaying a modest number of ads before and during playback. While it is not possible to opt-out of these ads, you do not have to consent to the selling and sharing of certain information.

We’re never going to get anywhere if people on these communities can’t act in good faith and share correct and information - not sensation. Change the OP or mods delete this misinformation.

ETA: shame on the 63 people who mindlessly upvote this crap without factchecking OP too.

  • I don’t think it can be overstated how far Apple and Tim are straying from their core values with this and the intelligence failures.

It’s bad enough Tim really only made the Watch in his nearly 15y as CEO. His recent capitulation to the Regime and now this, it’s time to go buddy.

You’re good at feeding shareholders and doing the stock buyback thing, but that’s not really what apple is. All of what apple is and you tried to mimic failed: the car, the ski goggles, the power mat and most recently “intelligence”.

These are the signs a company has peaked and is just trying to ride the past successes.

Thanks to Musk and Trump he of course looks like a half decent business leader, but when all the veils of secrecy are lifted and the privacy promises turn out to be empty, there isn’t much left.

Those are good reasons to ditch a product. Yet, at the same time, inside the Apple ecosystem this is the only browser that allows cross platform watching of yt without any ads, therefore suffocating Google and the fat cat MKBHD influencers from income.

So it’s like an evil to tame another evil to me atm.

Of course the best path forward would be to ditch both Brave and yt and then just get Nebula/patreon or something for serious content browsing.

I’m curious though: if I just use Brace only with a few yt tabs open and never open the new empty tab or visit another site, does Brave get any revenue from me?

  • The funny thing is that the YT comment section was almost immediately brigaded by Elmo suckups that complained the tester was using Autopilot and not the latest version of FSD, completely forgoing the point that the LiDar vehicle stopped despite any automation systems being turned on.

This was a test of the emergency braking systems of both cars in as close to real world scenarios as possible. Whether you run over a child in heavy rain or dense fog should not be dependent on whether the driver remembered to turn certain safety systems on prior to departure.

It’s a massive fail for Tesla, and it is the closest scientific proof that the Elmo is a rich daddy boy with shit for brains. Once you have that level of money and leverage, you simply can make the most stupid decisions ever, and keep falling upwards. Meanwhile real people are dying almost weekly in his vehicles, and reporters and news organisations are scared shitless to report on them because he can cause lots of pain with his imaginary cash. Not to mention no govt agency will investigate properly because he’s got root access to that too. All those deaths are entirely preventable.

Keep burning them, keep protesting at the dealerships. This truly could be the first billionaire we bring down. Watch him activate the OTA kill switch in every Tesla before they go under too. He’s thát kind of baby. Ironically that would save a lot of lives.
