Kenneth Oppel (author of Silverwing) is an awesome young adult author in general, I remember loving Airborne when I was younger too.

Guy Gavriel Kay is my favourite author in the world, he writes a particular style of realistic historical fantasy. His prose reads a lot like Tolkien, and he’s from Winnipeg.
Tigana is one of his more famous books, but my favourite is probably Lions of Al-Rassan.

Technology@lemmy.world•Someone ‘Torturing’ LLMs in a Robot Prison Has Triggered the Dumbest Debate in 'AI' YetEnglish
342·6 days agoI’m not going to argue against your conclusion, I strongly believe we do not have anything resembling human consciousness in software yet.
But Penrose was definitely not proven right (unless you’re talking about black holes), nor was the Orch OR theory about microtubules proven, nor was consciousness proven to be a quantum phenomenon. Here’s an easy, accessible article that goes over the state of the research: https://www.breezyscroll.com/science/new-quantum-evidence-is-reopening-the-debate-over-penroses-theory-of-consciousness/

4·12 days agoInterestingly enough, the founding document does not define the actual boundaries of Europe, only that you have to be in whatever “Europe” happens to be. Currently the boundaries of “Europe” are set loosely by convention, and can be changed at the discretion of the EU.

6·13 days agoIt concerns me that we don’t have any formal mutual defence clauses outside of NATO. I would certainly like France, UK, Denmark, and Norway to defend Canada, but as it stands, there is no “must.”
One of the reasons I’d love to see Canada as a full EU member is that the EU has its own mutual defence clause, which would protect Canada in the event of a US invasion and collapse of NATO support.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Federal government defends closure of seven research facilitiesEnglish
7·13 days agoWould’ve loved if the article specified what research centres were closed, what exactly they were doing, and how much they cost.
I was very upset when the feds closed the Weather Radar Research Group, but these “seven research facilities” don’t have any of those specifics.
For example, it makes a big difference if the government cut a vertical farm research centre that cost $500k/year, or if it was an experimental cattle farm and cost $5 million/year. The latter, I would agree with closing.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Kinew, NDP rise to new heights in Free Press-Abacus Data poll; support for Khan, Tories falls furtherEnglish
1·14 days agoThe NDP in Manitoba are a lot less socialist than the federal NDP, Kinew’s flagship policy has been removing the provincial gas tax. His other big ones have been removing the sales tax on snack foods, a homeowner’s tax credit, small healthcare funding expansions, a subtle tax hike on the wealthy, and a new housing campaign to reduce homelessness.
I’ve appreciated the small expansions to healthcare, housing, and taxes on the wealthy, but otherwise I’ve been personally disappointed. Frankly I think the NDP are doing so well in Manitoba because they are much more conservative than in other places, and it’s what a lot of Manitoban voters want. Most people I talk to are voting for the NDP specifically because of the gax tax holiday, not any progressive value.

6·15 days agoAnd a lot of the extra money has come from freezing tax brackets (rather than rising with inflation), and clawing back the basic personal amount from high earners.
That is, effectively tax hikes on the wealthy, but subtle enough that nobody got upset.
Props to him and his team on the budget!

I’m a teacher, so I have a lot I can personally do in this regard, but other professions might be different.
It’s interesting to me that his team titled the video “Forward Guidance,” because it’s the same phrasing central banks use. Central banks tend to put out forward guidance on rate policy every quarter in a similar way. Carney is very much a central banker, even now as PM.

32·1 month agoI think it’s worth clarifying that this comes alongside countries with a weak 4th estate. One of the notable connections between countries that are more critical of their own democracy, is actually having a stronger independent 4th estate to keep that democracy accountable.
That is, it makes sense Russian people would also have very high approval of their government and believe it’s democratic, which by Pravda (best source we have) they do. I don’t think this reflects reality, rather it reflects a powerful state apparatus that pushes for social harmony over information freedom. It’s easy to be less critical when your only news source can’t mention Tiananmen Square for example.
Really curious where this goes. I support everybody’s right to self determination, which includes the Québécois, but also the Anishinaabeg, Inuit, and the many other Indigenous peoples currently living on those lands.
I think this becomes increasingly complex because Quebec sits on both unceded territory as well as treaty land, so separation would have to deal with the legal hurdles associated with both.
