I like Arch for this. Ten years ago I wouldn’t have recommended it, but it’s been a great decade for me. Rolling distro means not many big changes at any one time. Don’t have to reimage to cleanly install newer release. Arch maintainers are excellent, updates rarely cause problems. Not perfect of course, but you get up-to-date software and an amazing community.

My maintenance strategy is to run a yum update before shutting down. Every time. Keep at least the previous kernel around for a backup. Maybe it was just luck, but it’s hardly given me any trouble over the years. Good luck!
