The answer is AGPLv3, or an exception if a corporation pays for one (in which case it just becomes a commercial license).

Technology investment bubbles have existed since at least the industrial revolution kicked off. Tons of airlines went bankrupt in the early days of air travel, for example. I don’t know anything about it but I assume the same thing happened with trains and a gazillion other technologies that actually are pretty cool.
Marx pointed out that capitalism needs periodic cycles of capital destruction, and here we are…

I think that you have to do quite a bit more setup on email than most other services. There’s SPF and DKIM and DMARC and so on. Plus spam filtering, setting up accounts and authentication, …
Plus email is arguably more important than anything else, since it’s kind of the lowest common denominator of the Internet; your dentist will probably send you an email to remind you of appointments, job offers will arrive via email, password resets arrive via email, and so on.
So it is a bit scary.
Having said that, as long as you’re not hosting from a residential IP addresses it is definitely achievable. You can start with one domain and use it for low-value purposes (or for accounts that allow multiple email addresses, like GitHub).

When I was in the US last it was a bit crap. I couldn’t remove an item, which was annoying because I accidentally scanned something twice, then picked the wrong thing in either fruit or baked goods (I can’t remember which). 🙈

Self-checkout works well in the Netherlands.
Imagine checkout is like rail. In the UK and Germany a disaster, but in Holland it mostly is pretty good. 😉

The thing is, where I live the system works well. It doesn’t make UX choices that make it hard to use, assuming that people are stealing all the time. It’s fast and easy, although so are the human manned checkouts, which also exist and are fine.

It depends on the technology. In Holland it’s great. In Belgium it sucks ass. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sorry, this is Canada, eh?

I have a Samsung refrigerator that wants to connect to the Internet. Of course I don’t allow that.

A smart refrigerator could cool down more when electricity is cheaper, for example when the sun is shining on my solar panels.

I think that ZeroSSL are owned by an American company.

I worked on the Yeti Project a while ago, which showed that an independent group of operators can run root servers.
Managing the contents of the root zone was out of scope… we used the ICANN root.

I don’t like Apple. I find their UI to be hard to use and counter-intuitive. Their walled garden / vendor lock-in is a model of monopoly behavior that is terrible.
However, unlike most other US tech giants when you use their stuff you are the customer, not the product. It is in Apple’s interest to keep their customers happy.
So on one hand it is surprising that they would upset their customers like this.
However, capitalism dictates that if their is also a chance of making money by making you both the customer and the product, Apple has to take it.
So on the other hand completely unsurprising. 😅

That sounds like terrible reliability. If my home lab had an outage like that I would shut it down as I clearly don’t know how to run a dependable system. 😅

I don’t know of any resolvers that simply fail after not getting responses from a single name server. Please name and shame!

Precedent that laws don’t apply to billionaires.

I use restic to:

What do you mean to say? It’s not clear to me.

We don’t use any parental controls. Our kids have always been very trustworthy. I disabled all Google parental spying and blocking for my son as soon as the age limitations would allow it. (My stepdaughter was under the thumb of her father’s monitoring for a long time. She had to face his wrath when she turned off location sharing with him on her iPhone… her second year of college.)
We had to brow-beat my son into getting a WhatsApp account so he could chat with his classmates (his actual friends use Signal, but WhatsApp is what group chats mostly use in Holland). 😅
I have a (former?) friend who says that. He’s fully addicted to algorithm-induced rage. He sends me 3 or 4 Islamophobic and/or Zionist videos from Instagram or X or Facebook every day for some reason.
