When I receive things like this, I make sure to open Gmail from within Firefox with all extensions meant to defend me (like NoScript, unlock origin, privacy badger, https everywhere) and then I hover over the gigantic button “check my activity” and see if it leads to a accounts.google.com link.
Either way, I then copy the link address without clicking on it, and open it in a private window to see what happens. If it’s a scam, the page it opens has a legit looking, but wrong google address (aka, it cannot really end with google.com). Then I just stop having fun and don’t continue nor type anything
What does it look like in your case?
“TurboTax must die”
That would be the perfect title of a multi billion dollar franchise about rebels from the IRS tryijg to thwart known scammers from Intuit.
Operation Mindcrime is a gem!
Silence!
Don’t tell the holy secret to the world!
When I look for things on Gmail on my laptop, I get detailed and complete results, when I do the same on the Gmail app, it seems like I get all results up to maybe two years ago (and it doesn’t show the rest). This second thing is really annoying, but at least on the computer version I always get everything
I was very excited to get an invite shortly after it’s opened and I still have all the emails that tell me my friend XYZ accepted my invitation to Gmail.
It was a time when getting a Gmail invitation wasn’t trivial.
Here’s a video recalling how exciting it was to have a Gmail.
Nowadays it’s different and possibly less good, but searching in Gmail is still very easy, which is awesome
It’s currently late and I am on my phone, so I can’t research this too well, but for example this thread and official Microsoft link discusses th Adrozek malware which injects you with unwanted ads and information directly from your browser.
Sure, it’s not a virus in the older sense of the term where someone either burns your drive or takes over your computer and locks you out asking for a ransom, but it’s still piloting you unsuspectingly and you don’t want it.
I dislike the fact that “ads” can also include crapware being injected into my computer (viruses, tracking cookies, mysterious scripts, etc).
You’re right about Sci-Hub because of their Indian lawsuit which is very important to them, but I didn’t know that Anna’s Archive was a repository of scientific journals. Is it? I know Library Genesis (or LibGen) has a lot of scientific textbooks, but I didn’t know it had papers. Does it?
Anyhow, Anna’s Archive and LibGen are super awesome too!
Sorry, I don’t work in economics so I don’t follow this (but it looks like a great analysis for someone who doesn’t understand it!).
Do all these things mean Reddit IPO is likely to tank (though one never knows)?
I’d like Spez to pay for all he’s done to 3rd party apps and driving mods (and us users) away, but in the end I’m afraid it’s only going to be regular employees to feel the pinch and Spez just cashing out…
Also, Reddit has a ton of users and some other article these days said they’re going to sell everything to AI services that are going to train themselves on Reddit for a lot of dollars. Would this be enough to keep them afloat?
Here’s hoping at some point search engines will return Lemmy links when people look for answers, but we’re not there yet
Well, you’re right in principle, but with my (old, but current) Mac+Intel configuration Firefox is not as sleek as Chrome and also often Firefox turns the fan on while Chrome doesn’t (it may just be that Google is bricking Firefox when you’re on YouTube, for example)
Anyhow, I’m trying to use Firefox as much as I can (I’ve always done so), but it’s always been true it was a better experience to use Chrome on my setup (and I’ve never used Safari)
Edit: why the downvotes? To teach me a lesson? I said he’s right, but I do have an actual problem and cannot yet make the full move (and am going to check out the suggestions below. Thanks!)
