It’s important to note that to produce an AI-generated image of somebody, they do not need to exist in the training data beforehand. You can use an image as a prompt, and an AI can create new works based on that prompt, without ever referencing the person from training materials.

Most of these CSAM files are not readily available on the clearnet, and I don’t think even Elon is stupid enough to let an AI scraper run free on Tor. One would have to go significantly out of their way to locate clearnet sources of CSAM to include into the training data.

Some would say it’s a distinction without difference, but I think it’s important to understand how these AI images are actually created, if you want to adequately legislate them.

The idea that CSAM is used in training data is largely discredited. An AI doesn’t need to have actual images of nude children to generate CSAM; it knows what humans look like naked, and it knows what children look like - it fills in the gaps from there.

If one day YT sets a “minimum requirements” page on their website to access their content, they’ve immediately ceded market share to the next upstart. Imagine if they broke viewing for all of the countless cheap (and e-waste) phones, tablets, low end IOT devices, “smart TVs”, and so on because they place a requirement that the device cannot meet. Those users will not throw away their hardware - they’ll migrate to the first available alternative way to watch content.

This all incorrectly assumes that there exists any viable competition to switch to. YouTube ran at a net loss for over a decade to get the reach they currently have, only because Google was one of the very few companies who could feasibly afford to do so. Nobody else with the resources to compete with YouTube is willing to compete with YouTube, because of the massive cost required to get even a fraction of that user base, let alone a critical mass.

And most of the content people access YouTube for is only found on YouTube, so those hypothetical users aren’t going to switch to a new platform, they’re going to either just flat-out stop watching or will replace their devices.

Those are fantastic solutions if you don’t want anybody to watch your content.

As they should, honestly. While those bots can be used to track down and identify predators, they have also been used for harassing and doxxing innocent users. There’s little to no security oversight with those bots.

I agree! I think the Fediverse needs more “normies” to be present around here. Not just for the sake of having more numbers and being a more popular platform, but we need difference of opinion, and it needs to be embraced much better than it currently is.

When everybody in a community agrees on 99% of things, they tend to become rather tight-knit. But whenever that 1% comes up which goes against the flow, the reactions around here tend to be quick and harsh, and the 99% of other things you previously agreed with that person on get thrown out the window all because they don’t share the same opinion about Linux as you, or something.

It’s not a healthy pattern for a growing community.

I notice that a lot here on Lemmy, and I think that’s because most of us here have at least an above-average understanding of current technologies, and tend to forget that we’re a very small minority of people. So when above-average understandings are commonplace in your online bubble, your view of what an “average” understanding is can become skewed.

General intelligence is substrate dependent, meaning that it’s inherently tied to biological wetware and cannot be replicated in silicon.

We’re already growing meat in labs. I honestly don’t think lab-grown brains are as far off as people are expecting.
