Can I say I’m surprised when the Canadian government is running cover for Israel, provides them with weapons, and still hasn’t sanctioned them even after they killed Canadians.

Anand’s only response to Israel’s investigation of killing a world central kitchen aid worker who was Canadian was a tweet “unacceptable”.

    Totally pathetic

But members of Palestinian Students and Scholars at Risk, PSSAR, say the interview process for these students is more like a “witch hunt,” with interviewers pressing the students on their reasons for attending state-funded universities in Gaza under a Hamas government.

“The line of reasoning was, ‘Explain why you went to this school. Does this not mean that you’re affiliated with Hamas?’ And the students say, ‘We went to the state-run schools.’ This couldn’t possibly have been a political choice on our part but that appears not to have been accepted,” Terezia Zoric, president of the University of Toronto Faculty Association, told a Tuesday press conference.

“The students have shared with us other lines of questioning that are all premised on the idea that you’re guilty until proven innocent, with gotcha-type questions.”

These students are masters and PhD-level students who have been accepted to research roles at Canadian schools, according to PSSAR.

Amer Shalaby, a University of Toronto engineering professor and PSSAR board member, said while the group is not aware of any of the students being approved for visas at this point, some have withdrawn their applications.

"They have lost hope in the possibility of receiving a favourable response from Canada, or at least a transparent process that they can understand,” Shalaby told a House of Commons news conference on Tuesday.

From the Globe article linked to in that report. Shameful. I hope they get visas from other countries to further their research and contributions elsewhere if Canada’s not going to give them a fair shake.

A PhD is not a standard university degree. It’s a research apprenticeship that takes place over multiple years around a specific question/research group. Even if a particular school is better (by some magazine’s questionable ranking system), someone might choose to go to the “worse” school if the research of a particular supervisor is aligned with their background.

As per this article, our schools have identified that these particular students have backgrounds that are in line with the placements that they applied to, enough so that some of the students are fully funded so that they can come here and help push the work forward.

But I’m pretty sure you understand this already, and are choosing to sealion anyway. This explanation is for anyone else that comes across this thread. I’m applying a temporary ban so you can think about how you should speak about other human beings.

          So what does that mean?

It means they can choose to go to school wherever they want and don’t have to be restricted to certain countries due to their ethnicity.

So my question is why wouldn’t they want to attend a university that more aligns with their values?

Maybe Canada DOES more align with their values? You know virtually nothing about these people.

If you think Arab Universities are less than Western ones that sounds just a little racist to me.

Yeah, keep trying to hide your own blatant bigotry by randomly accusing me of it and shoving arguments in my mouth. I’m not the one saying “Arabs should the stay out because they’re Arabs”. That would be you.

Id definitely block anyone’s visa if they are protesting Canada while outside Canada. Immigrants should be on their best behaviour when applying for visas. Their sense of entitlement and cooperation will be worse once they arrive.

That’s not what the denial is about.

Despite two years of sustained pressure, Prime Minister Carney and Lena Metlege Diab, the minister responsible for student visas, remain unconcerned by the distress of these students. For many months, Diab’s spokespeople have claimed that applications for study visas can’t be processed without biometric testing. This is a ludicrous requirement given Israel’s total elimination of all relevant facilities in Gaza and past practices for Ukrainians, Afghanis and Syrians coming to Canada.

As for why your premise wouldn’t be grounds for a denial, by definition every immigrant petitions to be let into a country. You are picking and choosing when you see that as a request vs a protest.

Someone that is allowed in on their first request would have no reason to ask again. You can’t then point to their subsequent requests and say that they’re being “entitled” and “uncooperative”. Not to mention that these aren’t charity cases:

During his acclaimed Davos speech in January, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would exercise what he called “principled and pragmatic” leadership on the world stage. Among his government’s pragmatic goals is attracting top international talent to Canadian universities. In keeping with this, Canada implemented an expedited 14-day processing period for PhD students seeking study visas and pledged $130 million (CAD) to assist “top international doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers [to] relocate to Canada.”

It is hard to square Canada’s enthusiasm for recruiting the world’s best and brightest with its stonewalling of some of Palestine’s most distinguished graduate students. Currently, 130 students from Gaza who have been accepted to study (and in many cases awarded full funding) in masters and PhD programs in Canada are in limbo. Some have been waiting nearly three years for a study visa.

      Be better.

Oh! Advocating for breaching the Canadian charter. That’s nice. And based on the assumption that people from a different country were protesting Canada’s government while there?

So assumptive and not very smart. Were you part of the trucker convoy?

Carney and other officials says they get to protest, and the Calgary police are sending the wrong message

          Haha so two things here

1- you are assuming that they’ve protested Canada while abroad (because yeah, that’s what a Palestinian does in their free time, protest a country that they’re not in - lol) and avoiding how idiotic that sounded.

2- you agree that the charter of rights protects the freedom to protest, but you want to apply that freedom selectively because you don’t like the people that you’ve fully assumed are practicing that freedom

Definitely part of the trucker convoy lol!
